It is with sadness that we share the passing of former 小蓝视频 Trustee Edward O. Wilson who died on December 26, 2021 at the age of 92. The 小蓝视频 flag will be lowered in his memory.

Edward O. Wilson was a giant in the field of biology and one the world鈥檚 leading experts on insects and biodiversity. Over his decades-long career, Wilson discovered how ants communicate with one another, shone a light on the very fundamentals of natural selection, and was among the first to understand the evolutionary basis of both animal and human societies. He was also a beloved member of the 小蓝视频 community.

Wilson was a Harvard University professor for 46 years. During that time, and after his retirement in 2002, he authored more than 430 scientific papers, published more than 20 books on the natural sciences, and won two Pulitzer Prizes.

From 1969 to 1973, Wilson was an independent researcher at the 小蓝视频. He was also an instructor for the Marine Ecology course (1969-1972), a faculty member in the Microbial Ecology course (1979), a consultant in the Training Program in Microbial Ecology (1974-1976), and a special lecturer in the Ecology and Neurobiology courses (1976). He was an 小蓝视频 Corporation member from 1971 to 1989 and an 小蓝视频 Trustee from 1972 to 1976.

Friday Evening Lectures are a quintessential 小蓝视频 tradition, given each and every summer since our founding in1888. Wilson gave three Friday Evening Lectures, delighting the Woods Hole scientific community over the course of three decades: 鈥淭heory and Experiment in Zoogeography鈥(1969), 鈥淭he Organization of Insect Societies鈥 (1979), and 鈥淎nalyzing the Superorganism: The Legacy of Whitman and Wheeler鈥 (1988).
